Christmas Day

Merry Christmas everyone! I hope that everyone had a good time with their family. Today was such an interesting experience. Since Whitney and Spencer won’t get to California till the 29th, we are waiting to celebrate Christmas with them. Still, to celebrate Christmas today, with no presents and pictures was still a great day. Today I was able to focus on Christ. I was able to go to church, hear songs of praise to Him, come home and focus on Him. The celebration of His birth.

It really should be like this every year. Before the commercialization of Christmas, it was simply about Christ. About being with family, and celebrating all the blessings we have received. Today I was really able to feel that focus. I liked it :)

That’s not to go without saying though that I am still pretty excited to open presents later this week.

Also, it seems weather everywhere feels like this:

I pray for just a few days of California sunshine

I hope you all are still doing well! You are in my prayers.

Chelsey

Something New

You guys, there is something very different about Utah. The weather is totally unpredictable here. One day it is pouring rain, and the next day it is nice and warm outside. Weird. But I like it :)

Can’t wait for thanksgiving! Hope y’all are excited too!

The First Snow!

You guys! It was just snowing outside! Given, it was only like, 5 tiny little snowflakes that fell before it stopped, but it was snowing nonetheless! Plus the mountains are all starting to get covered in snow! So pretty! And sooooo freezing! I’m already missing summer a little bit. Winter is pretty too though :)

Prepare to be Inspired

Last weekend when my family was here, we stopped by Deseret Book and I got the book “Created for Greater Things” by Jeffrey R. Holland. It is packed full of inspiring quotes and messages, and I am just in love with it! One quote this week especially inspired me. It was:

"God expects you to have enough faith and determination and enough trust in Him to keep moving, keep living, keep rejoicing. In fact, He expects you not simply to face the future (that sounds pretty grim and stoic); He expects you to embrace and shape the future-to love it and rejoice in it and delight in your opportunities."

Wow! Isn’t that so true? God expects more than for us to just survive. He expects us to take advantage of our blessings and thrive in life! I just love it! So that is what I have been focusing on this week. Thriving. Moving forward with power. Having optimism. Even though I’m sick, I’m trying my best to have an attitude of hopefulness and optimism. It is pretty sweet :)

Hope everyone is having a fantastic week as well! I love you all a bunch!

Hello Again!

Wow, it’s been far too long since I have written a post here! I hope everyone is still doing well :)

This last week has been so ridiculous! With a mix of meetings, band rehearsals, concerts, and midterms to study for, life has been a tad overwhelming!

Thursday night was the best night of the week by far though! Once a semester each band gets the opportunity to perform their very own concert, and Thursday night was the night for Symphonic Band! Our ‘big’ piece for the concert was a 5 movement piece called “Of Sailors and Whales” with each movement composed to describe one of the characters of “Moby Dick.” It was awesome! We had a professional narrator and everything. The other pieces went so well too and it was just so much fun to perform again! With how much I practice now, it makes performing so exhilarating.

Last night I went to the Men’s and Women’s Chorus concert, which was so fantastic! They were so entertaining to watch, and their concert was sold out! Wow!

Tonight I am going to the Wind Symphony concert, which I am so pumped for! So much music all in one weekend! Oh, another exciting tid bit! For my Psychology of Performance class, 5 people were selected to perform a solo in the De Jong Concert hall, and I was one of the 5! I’ll only be performing for my class, so it will be a little audience, but I am soooo excited to play a solo in that HUGE concert hall! Aaaaa it’s a dream come true! Can’t wait!

I hope everyone is doing well!

Updated!

Hi everyone! I don’t actually want to take the time to write out my whoooolllleeee week again, so here it is from the email I sent:

This week has been a huge one. Mom, Dad and I left for Utah on Monday afternoon and drove to St. George. Saying goodbye to the puppies was so hard! We had Cafe Rio for dinner Monday night though, which was super delish! Then Tuesday we drove onward to Provo and started the BYU process. We went and got my textbooks and ID card and then went and picked up Whitney from the airport. Later that night we went to Temple Square where we did a bunch of fun stuff. We went to the Joseph Smith Center and watched the movie there. They changed the movie some. It is more investigator-friendly so it was much more understandable to those who aren't members. We also ate delicious sandwiches and a mint brownie (YUM!) at the cafe downstairs and we got to see Sister Yarn. We almost went the wrong direction to the Visitors Center and would have missed her but I really had to go potty and she was right next to the bathrooms! I was so inspired. :)

Wednesday I was able to move into the dorms, and getting my bed raised was such an adventure! It took: Dad, Whitney, a bed raiser-helper, and two guys from maintenance to finally get it up. After I was all set up we went shopping for more stuff and then went out to dinner at Magelbys. Yummy! We got the most delicious bread ever! After that I went to a carnival for Helaman Halls which was pretty fun. There were lots of fun people there.

Thursday all the Freshmen were divided into 'Y Groups' and we played get-to-know-you-games and then went to a devotional where they talked to us about BYU. The devotional was realllllly good! After that we ate lunch (with graham canyon ice cream!) and went on a tour of the JFSB and library. It was all really good. I became really good friends with these people named Tori, Evan, and Meighan. Only Evan came to the night part of Y groups, but we saw a big performance on the Honor Code, which was really funny. After that we went to the stadium and took a class picture in the shape of a Y and watched an awesome sports pep rally. Oh yeah! Thursday we spent a looong time trying to get the internet on my computer to work too, and finally after three hours on the phone, Mom and Dad figured it out. Stupid internet. It has worked since then though, thank goodness.

Friday was a fun day too. We went to a Religion Class devotional with our Y groups and Brother Parker spoke and it was realllyyy good! After that we took tours of the campus and ate lunch. Then, Mom Dad, Whitney and I went and got more Cafe Rio and went back to Grandmas house for a little while. Then we went shopping and I got a bunch of snow clothes :) Yay! Maybe I wont freeze after all. I spent the night with them at Grandmas house and that was fun too. I was reaaallly tired though!

Saturday morning we all went to find my classes and that was fun. BYU is so huge! After that we went to the Wilk and got lunch. Then we went back to the dorms and had to say goodbye. That was really hard. Afterwards I practiced my flute and then wandered around campus with Tori. We went back to her dorm later. Saturday night I had dinner with my roommates which was a lot of fun and then there was a Freshmen Orientation Finale. I hung out with Tori and her roommate Julane and the night was so fun. Divine Comedy performed too, and they were sooooooo hilarious!

Sunday I met in the YSA 114th ward for the first time. There are 114 girls in the ward and 41 boys, which makes it weirdly unbalanced. It is still a really nice ward though. I hung out with my RA Katie for most of it. She is really nice, I like her lots. The leaders all seem really cool too! I think I am meeting with the bishopric tonight. Sunday night we had ward wrap-up and got divided into our FHE groups. We have a really cool group too. Last night for FHE we played games and got to know each other better. It was so fun.

So yesterday was the first day of classes! I like all my classes a lot. All the teachers are really funny and it looks like there will be lots to learn for all the classes. In my religion class I volunteered to say the opening prayer and ended up having to introduce myself to the whole class and do all the readings for the entire class. Thats what I get for trying to be righteous! Haha. Yesterday afternoon I also had my band audition and was placed in the symphonic band (I think all the freshmen got placed in there). I met a bunch of other flute majors too, which I was super pumped about! They all seem really nice and funny. The first flute masterclass is tomorrow night. Yay!

Now: The flute masterclass today was awesome! There are a lot of really nice people in the class and it sounds like it will be a lot of fun. All my other classes today were awesome too :) And tomorrow I have my first band practice :) The most overwhelming part is the 3 hour mandatory practicing 6 days a week. Performance majors have it intense!

Also, HAPPY BIRTHDAY DAD!!!!!!!!!!!!! Today is my dad’s birthday yaaaaay! I got to talk to him on the phone for a little while tonight which was really fun and it sounds like he had a fun day. I love you dad!!!!!!!

College Life

Hi blog friends! I just moved in to my dorm room yesterday and have been doing lots of fun stuff lately. I like college so far :) haha but class still doesn’t start till Monday. I have made lots of friends who I just LOVE already and the campus is soooo huge, I have to ask directions to get anywhere. I like the friendly atmosphere though, every person I’ve talked to has been super nice!

NSO is still happening tomorrow and Saturday night so we spend a bunch of time cheering. And learning huge amounts of information about campus. It is so fun though. Can’t wait for tomorrow!

Everything Will be Okay

Hi blog :) To be honest about something, I have been so worried lately. I am suddenly scared of everything! I’m scared to be with people, scared to be alone, scared for college, scared for my parents who will still be at home.

From all this fear though, I have really started searching. In my searching I found the devotional “Cast not away therefore your confidence” by Jeffery R. Holland. He talks about how during moments before major decisions and changes in life, we will be tempted to be scared. That during these vital moments, Satan will magnify the fears we have. He then continues to say that we need not fear-- That faith can always replace fear and that though we always need to be careful with big decisions, we do not need to be afraid. We will be okay. With faith, we will be blessed.

This devotional really is so amazing, and if you want to read it, here’s a link. Elder Holland is so exactly right about this. There is no reason to fear. The Lord is with us through all things. Of course life will be hard, and we will want to cry and we will be in the minority, but we will be okay. Good always prevails over evil. This brings so much peace and clarity to my life. I will be okay. The Lord is watching over me. We are in a war that we already know we will win. I am so grateful that I have this knowledge.

Inspired

Hi guys! I’ve been packing all day but in all my searching in my room, I found a couple quotes that I just Love!

The first is by President Gordon B. Hinckley:

“Some of you may feel that you are not as attractive and beautiful and glamorous as you would like to be. Rise above any such feelings, cultivate the light within you, and it will shine through as a radiant expression that will be seen by others. You need never feel inferior… Cultivate whatever talents you have, and they will grow… Try a little harder to measure up to the divine within each of you”

Did that not just make you feel more confident? Wow!

The other is by Dan Zadra:

“The best day of your life is the one on which you decide your life is your own. No apologies or excuses. No one to lean on, rely on, or blame. The gift of life is yours; it is an amazing journey; and you alone are responsible for the quality of it. ”

Aahh, inspiration. It really is amazing how humans can be so internally motivated. Hope you all are having a beautiful day!

Flute

3 hour flute lesson today Smile I love flute I love flute I love flute! The only problem is I’m sick right now. Still, flute is too awesome to cancel.

I’ve been packing for college lately. Packing and eating lots and sleeping a little and playing the flute and piano lots. I guess something to take from all of this is… college is going to be awesome because I’ll get to play my flute a lot.

Mom and Dad are both sick too. We are just a sickly bunch. Dad like normal, is acting like he’s fine. I’m pushing through okay, playing my flute a lot. Mom is resting lots. I really wish I had more to tell you. There is plenty to tell, however I don’t have any pictures downloaded at the moment and I’m wanting to have them before I post BIG important stuff.

I’ve been listening to recordings a lot lately too. BYU devotionals, still in love with them! I’ve probably downloaded half the website and I listen to them every night. Also, here is my piccolo audition piece:

*Please note: That is not me actually playing it. This artist is Cristina Stefan, she is super good!

I have 7 other pieces I am getting ready right now as well for my audition. So excited!

Hi guys!

Sorry I haven’t posted in so long. I’m still alive, just haven’t really felt like describing all the huge adventures that have happened lately. Getting ready for college Smile 23 more days till I leave. We have been doing sooo much shopping for it. I had no idea how much stuff I would need to buy, holy cow! I’m also planning for my next big audition, which is on the 25th. This is going to be going up against all the other flutists, which is a scary thought.

I thought I was going to keep this laptop for college, but last night it just started having problems charging. So, I think I’m going to go get a Dell Inspiron. Sweetness. Hope all is well with everyone!

My Flower Belt!

Hello family and friends! Hope you are all having a beau-tiful Sunday! This weekend us Whitehousers have:

cleaned the house
crafted and watched movies
went to Walmart, Joanns, and Barnes and Noble
and eaten food. So much food….

So, over the last few days I’ve been working on a flower belt. It has been soooo much fun to make!

They were all glued on to a ribbon and tied a bow in the back :)

Flower Belt 009

I don’t have any zoomed in pictures of it yet, I’ll try and get some tomorrow!

I Have a New True Love

and it is this:

pBBW1-9122460v275

Bah! It is glorious and I love it!

Heaven must have Bath and Body Works there. So everything smells good :)

Now, on to the real matters at hand. First order of business: I finished school! and seminary! Woohooooooooooooooooo!!! It feels good to be caught up and not have classes. It is weird though too. And uncelebrated. I kind of wish I got to walk with the graduates or something. My graduation celebration isn’t even going to be till winter break once I’ve started college. Oh well.

I’m trying to find a new laptop for college. I think I am getting a Dell Inspiron.  Nice :) I’m undecided on if I should buy a printer or not? It would probably be useful but would everyone bug me about using it all the time? Your thoughts?

Finally, I finished reading the Book Thief! First book I’ve read for fun in over a year and it was sooo good! I don’t want to leave any spoilers though so I’ll stop there. I’m reading The Hiding Place next. I’ve been assured by Whitney and Mom (about a bajillion times :) that it won’t disappoint. I hope you have a good day everyone!

Hi Everyone!

Shari, Mike, and Porter came to visit this last week. It was a lot of fun! Mike and Porter had run a half-iron man Saturday morning, and then they came down to our house from there. Poor Mike was so sunburned!

231150_503387247001_124000075_30044170_2779387_n

So, when they were here, we chilled at the house a lot while they rested. We ate lots of good food and went swimming a lot! Swimming was definitely the most fun part because it was hot! The puppies went swimming a lot too. They all like it too, except for Brawny. They were such good friends!

May 2011 033

Baby was moping around after they left. She expressed her sadness with lots of extra barking and piles of poop. Poor little girl.

Oh, we saw the movie Hoodwinked 2 as well. It was really dumb. No one liked it. Oh and Porter was a crazy driver. Shari warned me not to get in the car with him… I should’ve listened. Haha.

Oh, while they were here I had my AP Psych exam. And the day after they left I had my US History exam. Tomorrow I have my AP English exam. And then I am all done with AP exams forever! Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay! I’m celebrating with a 2 hour flute lesson on Thursday! So excited! My poor flute has been deprived of playingness since I’ve been studying.

Oh! And for Julia’s birthday present I made her these delicious chocolate peanut butter cup cupcakes! They were yummy.

May 2011 036

Oh, I do love cupcakes so.

Anywhoo, I’m going to go hide in my dungeon and study the rest of the day. Oh, and workout again (twice a day now. Intense schedule!)

Trying Something New

As part of 2011 ‘Create’, I’ve been trying a lot of new things. Making new things, talking to new people, driving different ways to get somewhere. It has been so fun! I like expanding my horizons, it makes the world feel limitless.

So, one new thing I tried yesterday was making cake pops! Kasey and I were hanging out and celebrating Easter/Earth Day/Good Friday with making a cake and we turned the cake into little cake pops. They didn’t turn out very adorable (some of the poor little things looked mutilated) but they are so delicious (as we already knew from Shari’s famous cake balls :) ) and they were so fun to make! I’m going to try and make some more for Easter tomorrow.

April 2011 007

This was definitely our most pathetic little cake pop.

April 2011 008

After making cake pops, Kasey and I played horse and tried to figure out a jazz piece on piano. It was such a fun day. Can’t wait for our next creation!

It’s Her Birthday!

So, this post is a wee bit late, but I wanted to write about my absolute favorite Ashypoo for her birthday! Ashlyn is one of my veeeery best friends and she is so funny and sweet and I love her! Even with going to different schools we have managed to stay best friends now for twelve years! And gosh, we have had sooooooooooooo many laughs in those twelve years from singing Wicked at the top of our lungs (with Airheads) to having so many cooking mishaps. How blessed I am to have her in my life.

To celebrate her birthday, she came over and Julia and I made her a cake and sang and celebrated and all that happy stuff. I love birthdays. It was fun :) I think Ashlyn thought it was fun too.

These are the shoes I made Ashlyn for part of her birthday present :)

And this is the masterpiece cake that Julia and I made her. Not only was it adorable, it was soooooo delicious!

Live With No Regrets

Today on BYU TV there was a show on a girl named Burgon Jensen. She was born with retinitis pigmentosa, and was blind by the time she was three months old. By the time she was five she started to lose her hearing too. However, she did not let this hold her back at all.

Burgon was enrolled in “mainstream” (public) school, where she attended normal classes with everyone else. She has learned Braille and American Sign Language. That’s not all though. She also performed (singing and dancing) in a play, has traveled across town alone, and so much more. I love her motto: “Live With No Regrets.” She is such an inspiration with how resilient she has been. There is a great article about her here.

I’m going to be a Flute Performance Major!

Hey everyone, Super exciting news!!! I was accepted to BYU School of music!!!!! I get to be a flute performance major, which has been my dream since like, fifth grade! I’m sooooooo excited! I will be able to study under April Clayton’s direction, which I am super pumped for!

I am so sad to leave Ms. Cindy’s Studio (at least till the summer when I’ll be home) but I am so grateful I’ve had such an amazing teacher for the past seven years. Ms. Cindy is one of the sweetest people I know and I am so honored to be part of her studio for so long. And I can’t wait for my flute studies to continue in Utah.

Mom is Crazy

Today we went to Costco and bought one of their way-too-huge jars of Jelly Beans. We don’t really like Jelly Beans that much but I’ve been craving them lately so Mom agreed to buy them. Well, on the way home we started playing a game. I would hand Mom a jelly bean and without looking at it she would have to eat it and guess the flavor. I gave her a few and she did okay with guessing them. The last one I gave her, this is what happened:

Chelsey: K, what flavor is it?

Mom: Hm… it’s fruity. Is it strawberry?

Chelsey: Nope.

Mom: Is it watermelon?

Chelsey: Nope.

Mom: What is it?

Chelsey: It’s banana.

Mom: Ew, I hate banana flavoring, this is disgusting!

*spits out jelly bean*

Do you see the problem with this? Mom couldn’t even tell it was banana till I told her so. She is crazy. Lol.

Sleepy Head

So the home teachers were just here a few minutes ago. Our home teachers are great. Nice guys who like to run, went to BYU, served a mission in South America, and come every month :) Mom and Dad love them. Today when they got here I had been sleeping so I had just woke up and was still pretty out of it.   Well, I just did something so stupid when they were here. They were talking about work and stuff, and Bro. Dockendorf says “Chelsey, how was your trip?”

and I couldn’t remember going anywhere. I just sat there being so confused and had to ask “Where did I go?”

They laughed and reminded me I went to Florida. Oh yeah. I felt like such a DOOF. And then I silently laughed at myself about it through the rest of their visit.  Great Afternoon.

Counting Blessings

It is 2:30 am right now. Why, might you ask, am I writing a blog post at 2:30 in the morning? Oh, just for fun. Not!

I can’t sleep. Still! And I am about to go mad because:

1. I can’t sleep

2. I have sneezed every 3 minutes for about the last 5 hours

3. I have the hiccups!

Aggghhhhh it’s like the whole universe is against me right now!!!! So, for the purpose of optimism and spirituality or something I think I’ll count some blessings. I am grateful for:

1. My laptop that allows me to do schoolwork and check emails and write blog posts all at the same time! Woohoo!

2. Water. I love water. Especially to drink. and to shower in. but not at the same time. that’s just weird.

3. Seminary. It is fun and happy and we have very spiritual lessons, which is always a fun way to start the day.

4. Airplanes because they take us everywhere we need to go! Or want to go! Really fast!

5. Notebooks. I have about a bazillion different notebooks to write quotes and ideas and random thoughts and stuff I’m grateful for and everything else! I love notebooks! Especially when they are decorated really cute.

6. No hiccups! They went away. Yay!

7. My fingers. Kind of weird thing to be grateful for, but I’ve thought about them a lot today. They help me type up assignments and play the piano and flute and do so many other things.

Yaaaay! I feel so much better now :) I think I might just be able to fall asleep. Goodnight!

Full Speed Ahead

As all of you know, I got a cauterization done on Thursday, which was soooo painful! Unfortunately, I have been resting/crying in bed for the last several days. BUT! Good News! Today I feel soooooo much better and am able to read and write and move around and feel good again! No More Pain! WooHooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am so glad that I finally feel better today and am praying that it lasts. Also, Happy President’s Day! Everyone is out of school today which is super fun! Sadly, Mom and Dad still have work today, and it’s super busy down at the clinic meaning late night work. Kind of sad, but a blessing at the same time. Anyway, have a super fantabulous amazing awesome day today!

Love,

Chelsey

PS I dyed my hair brown on Wednesday last week! Since I’ve been recovering I haven’t been able to put up a pic yet (Mom told me I looked like I was run over by a truck), but I’ll try and have one up tomorrow! Till then, here is an adorable picture of Baby (our puppy) when she was little, sleeping on my shoe. <3

So, with my Valentines Day, first I cleaned the house and studied for a few hours. Then the fun began! Julia and Ashlyn came over and we made valentines cupcakes which was so fun! After delivering some of the cupcakes to Julia’s young women leader, we went to old town Murrieta and took some pictures! We got there right at sunset, which was sooo pretty!

We stopped by Plowboys and got some chocolate covered treats, yum!

In the Sky

Today, mom and I traveled home from Utah. The trip to Utah was so much fun and I am pleased with my audition for BYU. We rested a lot at Grandma’s house and were able to visit with the Heaton's, which was all fun.

One of my very favorite parts of traveling though, is the airplane ride. Unlike Shari (who is terrified of plane rides), I love being in the sky, seeing the clouds below me and having the thrill of being 30,000 feet above the ground.

Today, when the plane took off from Salt Lake, we saw the most amazing sight! There was fog everywhere but once we were over the clouds we saw the fog surrounding the snow-covered mountains. It was sooooo gorgeous! I wish I could have taken a picture, but I didn’t have my camera with me, but it looked almost exactly like this

Isn’t it so pretty? I could have looked at  it forever! I love how the world looks from the sky!

My Favorite Thing

Okay, so with my theme “Create” for 2011, one thing I’ve been working on is creating new hairstyles, to break out of pulling my hair up in a ponytail almost every day. And for Christmas, one gift I received was these awesome (Pink!) hot curlers, which I loooove using now! My new favorite thing is having some awesome curls!

Eeeeee! My hair never looks like that, and it’s so cool! I finally can have curls like Whitney and Shari, it’s so exciting!

Foundation For A Better Life

Ever heard of this organization? I absolutely Love them, they do such amazing things worldwide. They do food drives for third world countries and write “GoodNews Letters” about amazing things happening all around the world. My favorite part of their organization though is their “Pass it On” billboards and commercials. They advertise good morals like honesty and integrity. How awesome is that?

Here is their latest commercial:

How cool that they work so hard to promote something so good. If you want to check out their website, its:  http://www.values.com/ .

So You Think You Can Dance

Ever seen the show? It’s awesome! Lately, I’ve had the song “Gravity” by Sara Bareilles stuck in my head, and they did an amazing dance to it a few seasons ago. They guy looks so evil in it, don’t you think? It’s so intense!

By the way, it’s about addiction, which I think makes it all the more intense. So cool!

Oh, my other Sara Bareilles song I’m just in love with is “King of Anything”  This one has a much happier beat to it :)

An Oceanside Sunset

On Tuesday night, Dad, Shari, Mike, Emily, Neil and I were all able to go to Oceanside and watch the sunset which was sooo beautiful!

I was able to get some pictures down on the shore while Dad and I were waiting for the others.

This one is my favorite :)

I don’t know who the couple down on the shore in this picture were, but I think they made the picture especially cute.

After Shari and Mike and Neil and Emily got there we went up on the pier.

After taking some pictures, we went to Ruby’s Diner for dinner, which was on the pier and surrounded by windows so we could see out to the ocean. It was really cool and the food was delicious! It was such a cute little diner!
